Perth is hard on fences, and it is hard on them in specific ways. Most of the coastal plain is sand over limestone. It digs easily and gives a post almost nothing to hold onto unless the hole is deep enough and properly concreted. Head east toward the hills and the ground turns to clay, which holds water and moves. Neither is forgiving of a shallow footing.
Then there is the air. Anywhere west of the freeway is dealing with salt carried in off the coast, and it goes to work on cheap fixings long before it touches the sheeting. Summer heat dries timber out until the palings cup and drop. Termites are a live problem right across the sand belt, and they do not eat steel.
We build for the block in front of us. Posts set at a depth that suits the soil, coastal-grade fittings anywhere near the coast, and rails run level rather than following a lumpy grade.

The sheets are roll-formed from zinc and aluminium coated steel with a baked-on paint finish, and a finished fence is three parts: posts set in concrete, horizontal rails spanning between them, and the vertical panels that clip into the rails. Nothing rots, nothing needs painting, and there is no timber in it for termites to find — which matters more in Perth's sand belt than most people realise.
Here is the part the fencing industry is quiet about: the materials barely vary. Every fencing contractor in this city buys the same panels from the same suppliers. What separates a fence that stands straight for twenty years from one that leans in three is post depth, the quality of the concrete work, and whether the rails were run level or allowed to follow a lumpy grade. That is workmanship, not product choice, and it is where our attention goes.

An extra 300mm of height and a bit of filtered light rather than a solid wall of steel. Common on front boundaries and around alfresco areas where you want privacy without the fence feeling like a barrier.
Where the ground falls away you either step the fence down in sections or close the gap with a plinth at the base. Skip it and you get a gap underneath — which lets dogs out, lets sand wash through, and looks unfinished. Woodvale and the older Kingsley blocks need this more often than not.
Gates are worth planning at the same time rather than as an afterthought. Colorbond gates in the same colour and profile, hung on hardware rated for the weight, are the difference between a gate that still closes properly in five years and one that drops on its hinges by the second summer.
A properly installed Colorbond fence is a twenty-year piece of infrastructure, and the maintenance it asks for is close to nothing — hose it down occasionally, more often within a few kilometres of the coast, and that is genuinely the list. No oiling, no repainting, no replacing split palings every few seasons.

A fencer comes to the property, walks the run, checks the fall and the access, and measures it properly. Not a guess over the phone. Book it through the estimate form or ring any hour.
Materials, height, length, gates, removal and disposal of the old fence, and the clean-up. One number, with a start date. If it is a shared boundary you get a written quote you can show the neighbour, which makes that conversation considerably shorter.
Most straight residential runs are one to two days on site. Stepped ground, long runs or an old fence coming out first adds time, and you are told that up front rather than on the day.
Old fence gone, offcuts gone, verge swept. The site is left the way you would want to find it, and that is part of the quoted price rather than an extra.

One thing worth knowing before you pick a dark colour. Monument and Basalt get genuinely hot to touch on a west-facing boundary in February. If you have small children, a dog that leans on the fence, or the run passes close to a pool area, that is worth five seconds of thought.

Most residential fencing in Perth does not need an application, but the rules are set by your local council and they are not identical. Stirling, Joondalup, Wanneroo, Bayswater and Melville each take a different line on front boundaries, and it is cheaper to check before the posts go in than after.
Generally straightforward at standard heights. This is where most Colorbond goes and it is rarely the part that causes trouble.
Where the restrictions bite. Height limits, how solid the fence can be, and sight lines where your driveway meets the verge. These vary by street and by your setback.
Under the Dividing Fences Act 1961 (WA), adjoining owners are generally each liable for half the cost of a sufficient dividing fence. Want better than standard, you cover the difference.
Fencing on top of a retaining wall, or where fill has changed the ground level, is treated differently again. Common on the split-level blocks through Woodvale and Ocean Reef.

Mid-range on price. No painting, no rot, nothing for termites. Twenty-year lifespan with almost no maintenance. Privacy is total, which some people want and some do not.
Cheaper on day one and dearer by year ten. Perth summers dry it out, palings cup and split, and the sand belt has a live termite problem.
The best-looking of the three and the dearest. Light passes through, so it suits front boundaries and pool surrounds where solid steel would feel heavy.

Steel is also fully recyclable at end of life, which preservative-treated timber is not.

If your job is a fence plus a gate, or a fence sitting on a wall, quote it as one job.
We do not publish a per-metre rate, and you should be wary of anyone who does. The honest range is wide enough to be useless as a number, and a price quoted over the phone is a price that changes once someone sees the block. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves it, so you can read any quote you get, ours or anyone else's.
The two obvious ones. Metres of run, and whether it is 1.5m, 1.8m or 2.1m. Going from 1.8m to 2.1m costs more than most people expect, because the posts go deeper as well as taller.
A flat run is the cheap version. Sloping ground needs stepping or plinths, which is more material and considerably more labour. This is the single biggest reason two quotes for the same length differ.
Removal, disposal and tip fees. Timber with concrete footings costs more to take out than a sheet fence. Ours is quoted inclusive. Check whether the other quote is.
Whether a machine can reach the line or everything goes by barrow through a 900mm side gate. Rear boundaries on battleaxe blocks are the usual culprit.
Sand over limestone means deeper holes and more concrete. It is where a cheap quote saves money, and where a fence starts leaning three summers later.
Gates, lattice or slat toppings, and any fencing that sits on a retaining wall. Each is priced separately and each should be itemised.
When you compare quotes, compare what is in them. A cheaper number that excludes removal, disposal and clean-up is not cheaper. Ask for it in writing with a start date, which is what you get from us. Book a free measure and you will have a fixed figure to hold the others against.
Fencing has a low barrier to entry, and the difference between good and bad work does not show for about three years. By then the cheap crew is long gone. Six questions worth asking whoever you are talking to.
The most useful question you can ask. Perth sand gives a post nothing to hold. Shallow footings are the number one cause of an early lean, and it is invisible once the job is finished.
Get it in the quote, not in conversation. Tip fees appearing at the end is a common and entirely avoidable argument.
A verbal estimate is not a quote. Anything that could move should be named before you agree to it, not discovered during.
Ask directly and expect a straight answer. Work on a shared boundary makes this more than paperwork.

Sometimes, as part of one. Where a pool sits near a boundary, a 1.8m Colorbond fence can form a side of the barrier provided the non-climbable zone is clear on the pool side and there is nothing to climb near it. The rest of the barrier still has to comply, and that is usually glass or tubular aluminium rather than Colorbond.
